From the Puritan dream of the "City upon a Hill" to the urban sprawl of the modern megalopolis, cities have both shaped and embodied the American imagination. In a chronological order this seminar will analyze the formation of urban configurations across the North American continent with particular emphasis on the pathologies of individual and collective living.Participants are requested to develop projects for presentation in class.
Reading material will be made available online.
Regular attendance is mandatory for all students (no more than 2 absences). You are required to complete all the assigned readings and study questions prior to class. Short and unannounced quizzes will ensure that all students comply with the requirements. Each student will develope a project of their own for presentation in oral and written form.
