The aim of this course is to survey approaches of "compositional hermeneutics" attested in legal texts in the Hebrew Bible and in early Biblical Interpretation. A key challenge in any legal system is balancing the competing needs of stability and flexibility. We will examine how ancient legislators interacted simultaneously with authoritative texts, traditional precedents, and changing circumstances to reach legal decisions and to compose new legal compositions. Some of the categories we will explore are: exegesis and eisegesis casuistic and apodictic formulations nominalist, realist, and subjectivist attitudes as well as particular exegetical techniques. We will focus on the analysis of primary sources, including biblical texts ("inner-biblical exegesis"), Dead Sea Scrolls, Pseudepigrapha, and rabbinic texts (primarily, Mishna and Midrash Halakha).
