We tell stories every day and use them for various reasons - to entertain, to provoke laughter or emotions like anger and pity, to share experiences with others, to teach children what is right or wrong, to give hope, to pass on knowledge from one generation to another (cf. Hass 2013). In this seminar, we are going to look at a variety of stories across different media (e.g. picture books, short stories, films), analyze their potential for foreign language learning and design tasks and materials that can be used in the classroom to develop the learners narrative competence. We will study theoretical texts and examine approaches that have been proposed in educational research and course books. Students will also develop their own tasks and micro-teaching units, which will be discussed within the seminar.
