Recent critical attention to photography as a ‘distribution of the sensible’ (to adapt a term from Jacques Rancière) reflects a renewed interest in photography as the production, storing, and circulation of images and imaginary associations. In this seminar we will read significant contemporary texts addressing photographic images and photographic practices—such as Roland Barthes’ Camera Lucida, Susan Sontag’s Regarding the Pain of Others, Ariella Azoulay’s The Civil Contract of Photography, and Geoffrey Batchen’s Burning With Desire. We will also discuss the work of photographic cultural production, such as Robert Frank’s The Americans, and Akram Zaatari’s work with the Arab Image Foundation. Students are required to do an oral presentation, and are encouraged to bring to the seminar their own photographic interests.
