This course is aimed at students of linguistics who have, at least, some experience with corpus linguistics. Through the use of existent corpora (text, video and audio), this course exposes the methodology to find out about the usage of language in different contexts. Students are required to find their own interest in specific linguistic phenomena and to test their assumptions on the corpora presented during the class. Thus, the aim of the course is to help students to conceive and to conduct their own project. The structure of the course consists of 3 blocks: 1) “an introduction to corpus linguistics”, where we focus on the historical background, the methodology for corpus design and different kinds of approaches used in corpus linguistics. 2) “Corpus analysis”, which is conducted using the tools and query languages of the available corpora(E.g. TXM for the French in the Base de Français Médiéval corpus). Thus, there is no need to have a background in programing. 3) “Corpus-based studies of synchronic and diachronic variation”, in this block we focus on Romance languages corpora (E.g.Corpus Diacrónico del Español -CORDE-, CORIS/CODIS/DiaCORIS, and LanAge ). Students are asked to present their projects after the seventh week of the semester. During the semester, we will have two invited speakers with expertise in computational linguistics and corpus linguistics.
