What is the roll of the educator, the social leader and the intellectual in society? Jewish philosopher and thinker Martin Buber (1878-1965) proposes to examine these questions in light of two "roll models" in the Jewish tradition - the biblical Prophet and the Hasidic Zaddik (the "righteous one"). For Buber these are not timeless and academic issues but of practical and pressing ethical urgency, namely, what can we, as woman and man of our time - teachers, Rabbis, students, etc - learn from these roll models? How can we engage ourselves and take part, according to Martin Buber, in Tikun Olam (i.e., the project of repairing and rectification of the world)? In this Seminar we will read a selecion of Martin Bubers texts on Hasidism, as well as his commentary to several biblical episodes dealing with Moses and the Prophets. Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of the Hebrew Bible. Basic knowledge of Jewish Thought (e.g. like "Einführung in die jüdische Religionsphilosophie").
Leistungsnachweis	Seminar requirements: weekly reading assignments, one in-class presentation and active participation in class discussion. Please note that attendance in this Seminar is obligatory.
