In this course, students will engage with the ways in which London figures in novels by Black and Asian British authors of the second and third generation. The focus will be on Monica Ali’s Brick Lane (2003), Zadie Smith’s White Teeth (2000) and Diran Adebayo’s Some Kind of Black (1996). Questions that will be discussed are: How can the urban environment of London be investigated both as a material and a symbolic site? How do representations of London in these novels draw attention to issues of ethnic identity, class and gender? How does London become significant with regard to the protagonist’s identity construction? To what degree do protagonists identify with the British capital and engage (critically) with Britishness? Students are requested to read the three novels, as far as it is possible, before summer term starts. Registration: The number of participants in this BA course is limited to 40 students.
