This course is embedded in a constructionist framework and its key tenet is that linguistic and social structures interdepend. In this sense, bicultural speakers and monocultural speakers differ from each other linguistically. After a general theoretical introduction the students will have to present different examples deviating from linguistic/cultural "monomodels" by looking at English vernaculars of minority communities in the U.S. and Great Britain as well as postcolonial Africa in which new Englishes formed.
1. oral presentations
2. mid-term paper
3. written exam (final session)
