Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements and grading. This foundational course draws on the phonetic, morphological, lexical, semantic and syntactic description of sentences presented in the introductory module and pursues linguistic description at the level of (written) text and (spoken) discourse. Texts and discourses are viewed functionally as ways of communicating and interacting with addressees. Their meaning, or interpretation, is heavily dependent upon context. We will examine a number of structural and organizational principles common to both text and discourse production, have a closer look at the context(s) in which the discourse is produced, and we will consider specific aspects of text and discourse structure including communicative genres and conversational structure.
