The seminar introduces, at the levels of phonetics, phonology, grammar, vocabulary and pragmatics, the study of urban/regional/national varieties of English as spoken in Europe, North America, South Africa, Asia and Australia/New Zealand. Each of the varieties discussed will be investigated both with a sociocultural and a sociolinguistic focus, including insights from some of the major projects of LVC (language variation and change) research that have been conducted for each of the varieties.
