The course focuses on Black British literature by writers of Caribbean, Asian, African, and other ex-British colonial origin. These writers are particularly alert to problems of cultural diversity and cultural contact. We want to investigate into (critical) representations of facets of British/Commonwealth diasporic experience in a number of exemplary texts and discuss their ambiguities. We will consider concepts of cultural mobility and cultural contact in the context of cultural identities within a national culture. This includes, of course, investigation into issues of socio-cultural, ethnic and gender constructedness as they come up in the texts.
