In Nigerian literature, the Nigeria-Biafra War of 1967-1970 is still a recurrent topic because it not only deals with a decisive moment in Nigerian history but also has repercussions with regard to contemporary discussions of nation-building and the constitution of a Nigerian national identity (as opposed to Igbo, Yoruba, Haussa etc. identities). In this seminar, we will discuss various (fictional) texts about the conflict ranging from short stories by Flora Nwapa via extracts from Chinua Achebe’s personal account There Was a Country to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun (which was also made into a film). Please read Adichie’s novel before the beginning of the semester.
