Scholarly debates continue regarding which of Oscar Wildes many sides should be foregrounded. Recent critical approaches have constructed, to give just a few examples, a gay Wilde, a feminist Wilde, an Irish Wilde, a philosophical Wilde. But is any of these positions more "right" than any other? Or should we rather follow the more skeptical voices, who see the key to Wildes closely related works and self-stylization in his eclecticism? In this course we will explore how art can be "authentic" by taking a close look at Oscar Wildes poetic, fictional and theoretical works, as well as his letters and real-life existence. We will also take into account various intertexts and theoretical positions.
