In her essay "How Should One Read a Book?", Virginia Woolf maintains that the activity of reading is characterized by its freedom from the laws and conventions that obtain almost everywhere else. However, as she immediately qualifies, to enjoy this freedom "we have of course to control ourselves". In the process of becoming professional readers, students of literature encounter this double bind. This seminar investigates modern and contemporary theories of reading and writing, applying them to a ion of modernist literary texts. Readings will include texts by Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida, Terry Eagleton, Carlo Ginzburg and Franco Moretti.
Literatur Required texts will be made available on Moodle before the first meeting.
Leistungsnachweis 3 CPs for regular and active participation and a session chair.
