Kommentar Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements and grading.

This course needs to be taken in conjunction with AM2 Syntax: Theories and Models (2).

This course will explore contemporary approaches to a number of issues, including (but not limited to) phrase structure, functional categories, case marking, agreement, binding theory, movement phenomena, and the interfaces of syntax with phonology, morphology, and semantics.

Students who wish to take this course should have already taken both BM2 and VM2 and have a good understanding of the basic notions of generative syntax. This course is structured more as a discussion group than as a traditional lecture series, so students are expected to actively participate in the classes.
Literatur Instead of a textbook, a number of articles and monograph chapters will be assigned during the course. To the extent that it is possible, these will be downloadable from the course website (http://www.luisvicente.net/coursematerials/am2-ws1415). The rest will be available from the University Library.
Leistungsnachweis The following items cover both Syntax: Theories and Models (1) and Syntax: Theories and Models (2). They are *not* duplicated for each course.

Attendance + participation: 10% of final grade.
One 20-minute in-class presentation of an assigned reading: 20% of final grade.
Five homework assignments: 25% of final grade (5% per assignment).
Two squibs*: 20% of final grade (10% per squib).
Term paper: 25% of final grade.

* A squib is a very short paper (no longer than 2 pages, including examples and bibliography) that describes a small set of data and their relevance for some aspect of linguistics. It can propose an analysis, but it doesnt have to (many squibs simply point out data that are problematic in some way, without proposing a solution). See the Snippets journal (http://www.ledonline.it/snippets) for many examples.
