In this graduate seminar, students will be introduced to the analysis of grammar observed in naturally occurring talk. The structure or grammar of English is not viewed as an independent abstract system, but grammar is understood as underlying actual language use, that is, shaping the organization of social interaction. This course aims to introduce students with the theoretical and methodological framework of Interactional Linguistics and Conversation Analysis. Furthermore, this course will give students the opportunity to conduct their own research on the relationship of grammar and social interaction. Apart from the investigation of everyday talk, this course will explore (L1 and L2) classroom interaction as the locus of grammatical instruction and language learning.
