In recent years, the role and effectiveness of corrective feedback in second language acquisition has become a highly controversial issue. Recent research tries not only to focus on its cognitive aspects but to include its social context and the psychological characteristics of individual learners. In this course, we will discuss the different theoretical positions towards the role of feedback both in oral and written production and try to show implications for the teaching/learning of English as a Foreign/Second Language. We will analyse empirical studies that explore the impact of different types of feedback and deal with questions such as whether or not to correct learners’ errors, when and how to do it. Participants will be required to carry out their own empirical studies the results of which will be presented in class or in a paper. A mid-term test will take place after the theoretical introduction.
