This lecture course is obligatory to all students of English philology and has to be taken as the basis for all further courses in the field of literature. In the summer semester, we offer this course for those who did not pass in the last winter semester. The course aims at an introduction to contemporary critical understanding of literature/texts (including: introduction to critical terminology and to main contemporary approaches to literary analysis, teaching basic techniques and methods of scientific work, etc.) The programme provides a survey of the most important literary genres (poetry, narrative texts, drama, and film). On the basis of a selection of primary texts, theories of poetry, narrative and drama as well as approaches to film analysis will be discussed. A successful passing of this course is the precondition for any participation in further courses/modules in the field of literature. As part of the module requirements you have to pass an obligatory written in-class test at the end of the semester (Zentralklausur).
