Course Description
This course draws on first and second language acquisition theories and research from the fields of socio- and psycholinguistics to support the use of music, games and stories in the elementary EFL classroom. We will explore the role of contextualized teaching and learning, cross-curriculum integration, implicit versus explicit learning, memory and language recall, the role of gestures, movement and embodiment (TPR), voice modification strategies and prosody, how to integrate the teaching of all 4 skills and cater to different learning styles, all with the end goal of building a communicative language classroom. In addition, the course offers a survey of authentic English-language songs, games and stories appropriate for foreign language teaching in the elementary classroom and aims to equip students with the tools and skills needed to evaluate, modify and implement said songs and stories into their teaching.
