This seminar acquaints students with central concepts and issues in the field of lexicology, the study of words and their meanings. In the course of the seminar, we will therefore discuss the notion of the word, where English words come from, how words are formed, which meaning relations obtain between words, how words are used, how words can be investigated and how information about words is listed in dictionaries. In this context, we will explore the variety of contemporary dictionaries (monolingual/bilingual, general-purpose/specialist, learner and electronic dictionaries).
