Mistakes are a common feature of the language learner’s (& teacher’s) experience and it used to be a widely held belief that the main problem was to prevent learners from making them.
With the publication of Corder’s article entitled “The Significance of Learner Errors” the conceptualisation of errors began to take on a different role. According to this concept, errors are like red flags which provide evidence of the state of a learner’s knowledge of the L2. They are not to be viewed as a product of imperfect learning or faulty imitation, but as indications of the learner’s attempt to impose regularity on the language s/he is exposed to.
Taking this as our point of departure, we will look at different types of mistakes/errors, evaluate the usefulness of methods of correction and explore the practical implications of recent theorising in this field.
