This undergraduate seminar is concerned with the representation of utopian communities of the 1960s in literature. The required reading consists of 4-5 critically acclaimed and commercially successful novels from the 1950s to the 2000s. Students will be introduced to concepts that pertain to the discourse of utopian movements, such as utopia, drop outs, exceptionalism.
Literatur Kerouac: The Dharma Bums Wolfe: The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (extended excerpts) Bugliosi: Helter Skelter (extended excerpts) Garland: The Beach Boyle: Drop City.
Please note that while these texts generally do not pose a challenging read, this course requires you to read roughly 1400 pages of primary literature alone.
Leistungsnachweis Presentation (15 min) + summary and theses.
To encourage thorough reading, students are asked to contribute short written theses outlines throughout the term.
