This course will explore the changing and enduring meanings and cultural associations of contagion in Britain and some (former) British colonies from the 18th century to today. We will examine the interrelation and interaction of changing medical understandings of contagious disease with cultural discourses and metaphors of contact, communication, pollution, purity, danger, morality and the body. We will consider topics such as: changing scientific understandings of contagious illness, early British popular understandings of and resistance to inoculation and vaccination (and their possible connection to anti-vaccination movements today), contagious disease in literature, the gendering of various concepts of disease and treatment, and the colonial imbrications of both the medical and metaphorical concepts of contagion.
