This course will explore how such adulterous acts reflect and shape the meaning of American family structures, religious beliefs and ethics, social contracts, gender politics, and economic changes. Literary scenes of adultery and their consequences will be the lens through which we will regard cultural, social, and political developments in U.S-American society from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. Attention: This course has a considerable workload of reading assignments.

Adultery is addressed in many works of American literature.
