Since U.S. independence, the relationship between the U.S. and Europe has been marked by strong connections but also by strong contrasts. We will explore the way Americans, particularly American travellers, have thought and written about Europeans and their cultures. Our focus will be the way in which these texts construct both ‘Europe’ and the ‘U.S.’ in processes of attraction and repulsion.
