According to IS, interpretation frames in ongoing interactions rely heavily on contextualization conventions (Gumperz 1982) – word choice, prosody, register, etc. These conventions are learned through socialization and are culturally-dependent. The aim of the course is to introduce students to the theoretical background and methodological tenets of interactional sociolinguistics and to have them analyze audio- or video-recorded interactions with a special focus on the use and function of contextualization conventions.
