Moving Pictures of Gender (Volume 2): Cinematic Insights into a Wicked Social Category - Einzelansicht

Description 

The aim of this seminar is to broach the issue of gender as a wicked problem by watching movies and analyzing their contents, narrative style, character design and aesthetic setup through a gender-sensitive lens. A focus will be placed on the way the screened movies and displayed characters challenge the gender binary. Thereby, the seminar aims at highlighting the historical construction of the gender binary and the cultural variance of gender roles.

A student moderator will introduce each session with a short presentation (about 15 minutes) on the issues and the problems raised in the movie and on its production (director, actors, producers, reception, etc.). The presentation will be followed by the movie screening (1.5 to 2hours). After a break, we will discuss and analyze the film referring to film analysis methods and the theoretical concepts introduced by articles related to the session topic(s) (prepared by all participants).

Please note that the seminar takes place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and ends on December 16th. No seminar on 11.11., 25.11. and 02.12.

Please note: Assignment for the first session

The first session is dedicated to getting to know each other. To this end, please be prepared to show a video clip of your choice (up to 2 min. - for example: trailer, advertising clip etc.). In a brief presentation (up to 2 min. as well), explain (1) why you chose the video; (2) to what extent the video is related to the topic of the seminar; (3) your interest and expectation in the seminar.
