This seminar will focus on the cultural history of modernism and its relationship with modernity in early twentieth century Britain and beyond. We will be discussing key works by modernist writers, composers, painters, architects, and critics in order to understand how the political, social, philosophical, and technological dimensions of modernity shaped modernist culture, and how that culture in turn became a sign of the times. We will be reading texts by Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Joseph Conrad, and Virginia Wolf in order to contrast and compare literary modernism with modernism in the visual arts (for which we will be looking at the works and writings of Wassily Kandinsky and Pablo Picasso), classical music (here the focus will be on Arnold Schönberg and Dmitri Shostakovich), and architecture (in particular Le Corbusier and Bauhaus). This will enable us to understand modernism as a school of thought and artistic expression that was, and still is, as interdisciplinary as it is international.
