In this course we shall study the history, literature and ideas of Jewish Spirituality. With roots in the Bible and the Rabbinic writings, Jewish Spirituality became a distinct literary genre in medieval times. The purpose of this literature was to encourage a deeper, more reflective approach to religious life. After a study of this background, our focus will be on modern times, from Hasidism onward (for example, Nachman of Braslav and Rav Kook), as well as on contemporary writers. We shall also explore some theoretical questions about the relation of Jewish Spirituality to New Age culture and to philosophy.
Leistungsnachweis The course will be taught in English, and will demand an intensive reading of texts, both primary and secondary. All Hebrew primary sources will be available in Hebrew as well as in English. Secondary scholarly studies will be in English. Grade for the course will be based on class participation, class presentation of readings, presentation of a paper or an essay.
