As data-intensive applications (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, PatientsLikeMe) permeate all walks of our everyday life, there is a growing interest in understanding how our use of these applications is changing public sector, businesses and society as a whole. Tapping into this interest, the goal of this seminar is to give students an opportunity to conduct an in-depth analysis of one topic in this area. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
• Big Data Developments in the Public Sector
• Privacy Concerns regarding Big Data
• Implications of the Sharing Economy (e.g. Airbnb)
• Implications of the Location-Based Online Dating
• Impact of Social Media on the Public Sector / Business
• Impact of Social Media on Individual Perceptions and Behavior
• Impact of Smartphone Use on Socialization
• Applications of Smartphone for Refugee Relief
• Market Analysis of Health Smartphone Apps
Students will be required to get a deep understanding of the topic of their choice, present their findings at the mid-term and final presentations and write a final paper.

Interest in Social Media and research methods. This class is limited to 18 students; and takes place both in German and English. Presentations can be held in German or in English.
