A single seminar on the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein could not possibly be comprehensive. Given that this seminar is not designed for graduate students of philosophy, but for students of linguistics, it can be no more than an exploration of some aspects of Wittgenstein’s thought that seem most salient for linguists – salient in the sense of deepening thought about what language is, about what meaning and understanding amount to, about the dangers of theoretical uses of language, and about the practice of linguistics itself. Our study of Wittgenstein will focus first on the thought about language from the early work, the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, and then contrast this with the latter thought contained in Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations. We will not discuss these works as a whole, but focus on those passages most relevant to our purpose: the exploration of meaning (semantic, pragmatic). The seminar will be conducted via contributions and discussions by all participants, and a résumé of a session, a short “study paper” for use in class, and a semester paper (5-8 pages) is required of each student.
