This class seeks to complicate the traditional narrative of the 1980s that begins and ends with Ronald Reagan. to that end, the course explores the politics and policies of the Reagan Administration, but also pays close attention to other defining themes of the 1980s like the conservative backlash against 1960s and 70s culture,the Culture Wars, the AIDS crisis, the rapid advancements in computer technology, Televangelism, Yuppie culture, the rise of Hip Hop, the popularity of "Brat Pack" movies and "Blank fiction." The course will first present a broad survey of United States politics, economics, foreign affairs, and culture before delving deeper into these specific areas.
