The Victorian era was long perceived in terms of a monolithic order, centred on undisputed values such as monarchy, imperial extension, entrepreneurial capitalism, religion and the family. But it is especially in the closing decades of the 19th century that traditional assumptions were increasingly contested from many sides, in utopian texts, political programmes and social movements. In short, these voices seemed to inaugurate a phase of transition in which everything could be political, from house decoration, dress reform, the use of technology and city planning, to familiy life and gender roles. Many of these approaches were successful and must be recognized as influential sources of inspiration for critical thinking and reform movements up to the present day.

This course will focus on a choice of key texts, including authors like William Morris, George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, Edward Carpenter, Ebenezer Howard and others.
