How does gender travel? This course will consider the mutual influence of travel and gender on travel writing from the 18th to 20th centuries. How did gender influence travel itself - from the mode of travel to choice of destination - and the writing produced and published by travellers? And how did the experience of travel influence the writers perception of gender, or their own gender performativity? How was gender perceived by the cultural others these travellers encountered, and how did they understand gender in other cultures? We will read a wide range of travel writing to consider these questions, as well as the impact of other factors, such as class, race, colonialism and religion. Completion of this course requires you to write a short essay (1500 words), plus some other tasks.

Once you have enrolled in this course, please enrol in the Moodle course: https://moodle2.uni-potsdam.de/course/view.php?id=10037 (Adair/Travelling Gender). You will find the reading for the first week's class there (Thompson - Defining the Genre). This reading should be completed as preparation for the first class on 12 April.
