Representations of Africa are shaped by the poetics and politics of the culture producing the transmitted images and texts. When you watch TV, you will most likely encounter an Africa ravaged by AIDS, Ebola, wars and malnutrition while travel brochures produce an image of endless savannahs, beautiful sunsets and an abundance of wildlife. In the course of this seminar, we will look at various representations of Africa like museums, films, novels, travel guides or newspapeers in order to explore how they produce meaning and establish notions of "the other".
