In later life, literary writers frequently turn towards the practice of autobiography, sometimes evolving a distinctive late style. As a history of the self, the genre of autobiography also fulfills various cultural functions. After a brief recapitulation of the genre from its religious beginnings to the eighteenth-century secular interest in subjectivity, the seminar will investigate the different subject matter subsumed more recently under the term life writing. Examples include age autobiography, illness narrative, psychohistory and histories of the body.
Literatur Required texts will be announced at the first meeting.
Leistungsnachweis 3 CPs for regular and active participation and a session chair.
