The course is designed to strengthen your critical thinking, your argumentative writing, and your writing style in English – areas that in the judgment of the department faculty most students still need to improve on and which should be transferred to longer university writing assignments. This tutorial is important for the following reasons: 1) you should learn to think better and more profoundly 2) to critically read and engage with arguments made by members of the university for a university audience 3) to communicate complex arguments clearly and concisely to a university audience 4) to do justice to views (and the people who hold them) opposed to your own, engaging them in an authentic dialog 5) to learn academic writing conventions at English-speaking universities 6) to be in a position to transfer what you practice in this tutorial to your longer papers (module papers and M.S. thesis) 7) to write more relevant introductions and conclusions 8) to design your paragraphs better using topic sentences 9) to conceive and plan your papers around an interesting thesis statement and 10) to increase your already advanced proficiency in English by doing challenging tasks with the language.
