Midrash is a Rabbinic Jewish mode of explaining, questioning and expanding biblical sources. Rich, creative, audacious and perplexing, midrash is often misunderstood and condemned. In this class we will do close reading of midrashic texts, which will be available in both Hebrew, English and German, in order to try to understand the Rabbis’ midrashic imagination. In addition, we will explore modern scholarship and theory about midrash through ed essays. The class will be conducted in English.
Leistungsnachweis	The written assignment consists of a final research paper on a topic chosen by the student in coordination with the instructor.
