A course which will teach the traditional Ashkenazi cantillation-chants for the Five Megillot,(i.e. the five books from the Hagiographa which are publically read in the synagogues during the Jewish festivals and the 9th of Av). The students will practice how to apply the Te’amim signs of the Hebrew Bible according to the traditional chant systems:
A. The chant system for the biblical books read on the Three Pilgrimage Festivals (Song of Songs, Ruth and Ecclesiastes).
B. The chant system for the book of Esther as read on Purim.
C. The chant system for the Book of Lamentations as read on the Ninth of Av.
Literatur Various literature and sources will be made known during the course.
Leistungsnachweis Students wil have to prepare various musical settings of texts from the megillot.
