In recent years autobiography, memoir, biography and testimonio have come to constitute fertile fields of research in literary and cultural studies. The term life writing has tended to encompass these particular modes of self-expression, accruing significance as a scholarly endeavor and a specific institution within academic settings. Critical research within these fields understand themselves as departures from more male-centered and subject-centered practices of autobiography. Foregrounding notions of embodiment, relational subjectivities, and paratactic temporalities, critiques of the ‘sovereign subject’ inform both feminist and postcolonial approaches. Covering some of this critical literature, this seminar is designed to extend beyond the ‘literary’ in life writing, to photography and film. Students are required to give an oral presentation, a short written report of their presentation, and a longer research essay that develops their written report.
