No literary figure has inspired so many operas (in the widest sense of the word) as Shakespeare, with nearly 300 musical works based in parts or in full on his plays. In this seminar, we will trace the evolution and musical adaptation of four of Shakespeares plays - The Tempest, A Midsummer Nights Dream, Othello, and Romeo and Juliet - and discuss the changes composers, librettists, actors/singers and stage designers had to make to the original text when adapting Shakespeare’s plays for the musical stage. We will also analyse the changing aesthetics of music theatre in the UK - and, more broadly, in Europe - by tracing the historical development of Shakespearean opera: from court masques in the early 17th century and semi-operas in the late 17th century to all sung operas from the 18th through to the 20th century and to contemporary musicals.
