Recent years have been marked by the hype around Big Data technologies and the implications that go along with it. In response to this potential, data science has become one of the most demanded specializations. Against this background, this class will introduce students to the fundamentals of Big Data and data science, using R programming language as a basis. As of now, R represents a leading language of choice in this area, and is widely used across multiple application domains. Specifically, in this class students will gain hand-on knowledge on how R can be used to acquire, transform and analyze the data and well as to perform data visualization. The course is built around practical problems that can be solved using statistical methods supported by R.
