The course gives an introduction to the business of energy and to energy economics, in particular as it relates the question of sustainability, corporate strategies, and regulation of energy markets. It provides a synthesis of “old” questions and answers in energy economics, with new findings of theoretical and applied concepts, mainly relying on industrial organization and institutional economics. Industrial organization tries to explain the functioning of markets that are not fully competitive, an assumption which is appropriate for almost all energy markets. Institutional economics studies the way in which firms, markets and organizations interact and how transaction costs and contracts determine the particular forms that markets and organizations take.
References will be mentioned in the course, a manuscript will be available.
