It is a widely held assumption that identities in contemporary U.S. culture are always constructed and reconstructed ad infinitum. Against this view which has become a cultural orthodoxy, this seminar will deal with failed, incomplete or otherwise problematic identity formations. The principle idea behind this is that the resistance that cultural identity constructions come up against is an interesting field for cultural critique.
