For three decades, the AIDS pandemic has represented a serious public health crisis and raised a range of controversial issues including sexuality, drug use, discrimination, the economics of health care, the ethics of biomedical research, and the meaning of individual and social responsibility. We will take stock of the “state of the epidemic” by exploring a range of perspectives on the history, present, and future of HIV/AIDS. According to Paula Treichler, the emergence of the virus was responsible for an “epidemic of signification” that produced an enormous body of cultural artifacts. We will look at cultural representations of AIDS, both as immediate responses to an epidemic crisis, as well as at later reflections on living in the “Age of HIV/AIDS.” Our primary focus on the United States will allow us to explore both the relationship of individuals and communities to the nation as well as how the disease helps to illuminate the dynamics of inequality and social justice in the nation.
