Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements and grading.Grammar books and dictionaries describe the inventory of words and syntactic patterns and serve as a basis for learning English. However, languages change over time, and their descriptions become obsolete, and the important point for every learner of English is that this is observable both in the course of hundreds of years but also in Present-Day English. This foundational course focuses on the change of grammatical patterns native speakers of English use in their everyday language production. We will examine the development of a range of lexico-syntactic patterns in Present-Day English, discuss the motivations for their change as well as the implications this has for language learners and teachers.
