In Against Empire, Zillah Eisenstein stated that “modernity exposes the woman’s body” (191). This is definitely not the only way the body is implicated in discussions of modernity. We will look at three fields much discussed in recent body studies and try to disentangle the discursive parameters which govern the specific regimes of representing and conceptualising the “modern body”. The fields under consideration are: (1) Treating the Diseased Modern Body; (2) Dressing the Modern Body; (3) Performing Modern Sexualities.
