The Gothic emerges in the 18th century as a "counter-rational" genre centered on transgression and excess. Transforming in Romanticism and Victorian times, the genre comes to focus on the double, thus problematizing the established conception of the sovereign self. Throughout, the genre is noteworthy for its implications regarding the representation of gender and the sexual. This course will first focus on the early and the romantic Gothic, and then shift to key examples from the late-Victorian age. We will also take into account film adaptations as well as present-day variants of the genre.
Literatur	Texts to be discussed include: Horace Walpole: The Castle of Otranto (1764), William Beckford: Vathek (1784), Mary Shelley: Frankenstein (1818/31), Charles Maturin: Melmoth the Wanderer (1820), Robert Louis Stevenson: Strange Tale of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), Bram Stoker: Dracula (1897).
