Black British writers are particularly alert to the problems of cultural diversity and cultural contact. We want to investigate into (critical) representations of facets of British/Commonwealth diasporic experience in a number of exemplary texts and discuss their ambiguities beginning with Selvons seminal novel The Lonely Londoners and reaching all the way into present writings. We will consider concepts of cultural mobility and cultural contact in the context of cultural identities within a national culture. This includes, of course, investigation into issues of socio-cultural, ethnic and gender constructedness as they come up in the texts.
