As suggested by the immense success of the recent Broadway hit Hamilton (2015-) -- a hip-hop musical about the American “founding father” Alexander Hamilton that not only received a number of important awards but has even been performed at the White House this year -- the American Revolution still plays a central role in American political and popular culture. This seminar explores conceptions of cultural memory and civil religion to come to terms with the enduring presence of the revolutionary period in American political rhetoric, public history, literature, music, and film.
